What's new
New features and improvements in Seating Chart Maker, newest first. We build the tool together with our users. Many of these started as user suggestions, so keep them coming!
Auto-save: your work saves itself
Rooms, rosters, and seating charts now save automatically while you edit. We admit, manual save belongs in the 00s! The Save button shows live status (Saving… / Saved), and you can still save manually anytime by clicking the button or with Ctrl/Cmd + S.
Wheel of Names: color themes & dark mode
The Wheel of Names now has fully customizable color themes and a dark mode, with some other appearance updates. Pick a look that fits your classroom screen or event. Wheel updates are listed in more detail in the wheel's own changelog.

Desk shapes: trapezoid, diamond & delta
Build modern collaborative layouts with non-rectangular desks. Combine trapezoid, diamond, and delta desks with the existing shapes to mirror your real classroom furniture. Let us know if you want more shapes or sizes added!

Advanced seating options
Improved options for generated seating charts: choose random or alphabetical assignment, control where empty seats end up (for example at the back of the room), and preview the result before applying it. You can also keep currently seated students locked in place and only seat the rest — handy when a few students need fixed seats.

Tidier home screen: bulk delete & list controls
Manage your rooms, rosters, and seating charts faster in the home screen: delete multiple items at once, flip the order of your lists and collapse long lists.
Expand & collapse groups
Group lists in the seating chart creator can now be collapsed, which keeps large rosters with many groups easy to scan, and hides the group contents if you want to share your screen without revealing the groupings.
Wheel of Names: full screen & embedding
Present the wheel in an enhanced full-screen mode, or embed the wheel on your own website or LMS page.
Alphabetical seating
Seat students alphabetically based on your seat labels.
Wheel of Names launched
A free random name picker: spin to pick a student in an exciting way, share a wheel via link, and open it straight from your roster. The Wheel of Names works as a free standalone app, or as a companion to the seating chart maker. When launched via Seating Chart Maker, the wheel automatically loads your roster.

Make a copy
Duplicate any room, roster, or seating chart to use it as a starting point for a new one. Great if you want to create a new version of a room layout without losing the old one.
Room templates
Start a new room from ready-made classroom layouts instead of a blank canvas.
Roster import from spreadsheets
Import student lists by uploading CSV or Excel files, or by pasting a list of names. Separators and name formats are detected automatically.
Share seating charts with a link
Share a view-only link of a seating chart with colleagues or substitutes. Recipients can also make their own editable copy.

Full-screen presentation mode
Present your seating chart to the class in a clean full-screen view. Great for projectors and smart boards.
Room design upgrades
More ways to make the room look like your room: decorative objects like plants and teacher's desks, new chair styles, and table colors. Tip: use decor as text notes, if you need to add labels to table groups or rows, or just need to add some text to the room layout. Also: view the real-life room dimensions of your virtual classroom. Researching real-life classroom and furniture dimensions was a surprisingly laborious, yet fun project.
Flip perspective & better printing
View, present, or print seating charts from the teacher's or the students' perspective; names and labels stay readable either way. Plus: PDF export in common paper sizes like Letter and A4.
Seat numbers & labels
Add automatic numbers or custom labels to seats. This was a user-requested feature.
